Newbie needs help!

Apologies in advance for asking a question probably asked many times before.
I did search other posts and have tried some suggested solutions.
In a previous job I used sunlite easy standalone.
In my new job I was telling the boss about this great system for controlling moving heads.
I persuade him to bid on a sunlite usb - dmx controller on eBay. It was to come with the sunlite studio 2004 for windows software.
I installed the software but the DMX is not detected. On the controller the green light flashes about every 4 seconds. The amber light is always on and the red light constantly flickers.
I have now spent 4 hours installing and un-installing various versions of software and drivers from the nicolaudie site.
I can't get the software to work.
The controller bought is slightly different to the one I bought. It only has a DMX out. The one I previously used had DMX in and out.
How do I know wahat version of controller I have?
What driver/software should I use?
Will this controller work with easy standalone as I am famioliar with that software?
